چکیده

Bilirubin is sensitive to light and oxygen. The rate of photodegradation of unconjugated bilirubin (Bu) was nearly twice that of monoconjugated bilirubin (mBc) and three fold that of diconjugated bilirubin (dBc); delta bilirubin (Bd) was the most stable against photoirradiation. In the presence of serum albumin, conjugated bilirubin (Bc: i.e., mBc and dBc) showed the highest rate of oxidation by peroxidase oxidation and bilirubin oxidase oxidation followed by Bu and Bd. The thermolability of bilirubin was reported by Morishita et al.. They reported that the values of Bc and TB decreased gradually as the temperature and/or time increased, and the values of Bu increased over a 2-day period at four temperatures: -20, 4, 25 and 37°C. However, little information is available regarding the stability of bilirubin subfractions within a short time period. The aim of this study is to investigate how bilirubin subfractions are destroyed by heat during 1.5, 3 and 6 hours of storage in the dark at 4°C (refrigerator), 25°C (room temperJournal of Analytical Bio-Science Vol. 33, No 3 (2010)

A Comparison between Transcutaneous Bilirubin (TcB) and Total Serum Bilirubin (TSB) Measurements in Term Neonates

Background: Transcutaneous bilirubinometry (TCB) is a simple method for estimating bilirubin levels in neonates. This method is noninvasive, quick, and painless. We aimed to compare serum and cutaneous bilirubin measurements in term neonates.Method: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 200 neonates with icter with birth weights of at least 2500 grams were studied. TCB was measured using a...

Comparing transcutaneous bilirubin versus serum bilirubin measurement using spectrophotometry for jaundice screening of full-term neonates

Background: Neonatal jaundice is an almost common problem among neonates that may cause complications such as kernicterus in severe cases. Since early diagnosis and proper treatment of neonatal jaundice is vital to prevent the related complications, it is necessary to check bilirubin before discharging the neonates. There are several evaluating and diagnostic methods to measure the level of bil...

The Value of Bilicheck® as a Screening Tool for Neonatal Jaundice in the South of Iran

The gold standard to assess jaundice in neonates is the serum bilirubin measurement. Blood sampling for the determination of total serum bilirubin (TSB) is painful for newborns and stressful for parents. The Bilicheck®, a new transcutaneous bilirubinometer, is considered as a more accurate measurement of bilirubin compared to the previous bilirubinometers courtesy of its advanced technology. Th...

بررسی رابطه میزان افزایش بیلی‌روبین در 48-24 ساعت اول تولد با فصل تولد

Background: The relationship between season of birth and human diseases is well known and such a relationship could be mediated by seasonal and environmental effects on early events of extrauterine life Empirical neonatological experience suggests that prevalence and degree of neonatal jaundice might be dependent on seasonal variation, mainly due to the sunshine duration. However, evidence base...

Effects of the Different Light-Source Distances from the Skin Surface in Conventional Photother-apy

Phototherapy is a conventional method of lowering serum bilirubin in newborn jaundice. We evaluated the short distance in relation to conventional long distance phototherapy between the light-source and the skin surface. Healthy jaundiced neonates undergoing phototherapy were randomized into two groups. The distance between the light-source and the newborn's skin was 20 and 40 centimeters (G20;...
